Andy Murray has been reading “lots of baby books” ahead of the birth of his first child with wife Kim Sears. The tennis champion, who is set to compete in the finals of the Australian Open on Sunday, said he wants to be a good father when the time comes, adding that he will have to “learn on the way”.

Asked in his post-match interview whether he was ready to become a dad, Andy replied: “I mean, I hope so. I’m gonna find out pretty soon.”

The 28-year-old also said he is sure that with the support of his wife Kim they will be able to provide a good start in life to their son or daughter.

“I’ve been reading a lot of books and trying to learn but I think obviously when the baby comes you need to be able to just sort of adapt,” Andy said. “I don’t think books or any classes or anything will make you a great parent. I will just try and learn on the way and obviously with the support of my wife we will try our best to be good parents.”

Andy could have lots to celebrate in the next couple of weeks, as he is due to compete against reigning champion Novak Djokovic in the finals of the Australian Open on Sunday. Meanwhile Kim is expecting their first child any day now – which could prompt a dilemma should she go into an early labour.

Although he is currently on the other side of the world to his heavily pregnant wife, Andy has previously said that he would drop out of the tournament to be by her side during the labour, telling reporters: “I’m going to fly home. I’d be way more disappointed winning the Australian Open and not being at the birth of the child.

“For me, my child is more important to me, and my wife is more important to me than a tennis match.”

The response echoed his previous comments that he wanted to be there “to try and help out, just be there for whatever is really required of me.”
