Has Captain Marvel Found Its Director?

Last month, Marvel boss Kevin Feige teased that the star and director for Captain Marvel will be announced this summer. With Captain America: Civil War officially kicking off both Phase 3 and the summer movie slate, it sounds like we’re getting close to an answer on who will steer the Captain Marvel ship. A few interesting things have happened over the past couple of days that have fans speculating that untested indie shorts director Emily Carmichael may have landed the job.

Screen Geeks has the initial report. They were alerted by a fan who has been following the pre-production on the Captain Marvel movie very closely. And they were able to connect some social media dots that led them to believe Emily Carmichael may have landed this coveted job. It appears that one of the two screenwriters recently hired by Marvel, Nicole Perlman, began following Carmichael on Twitter. Not a big deal. Until the next step in the chain happened.

Emily Carmichael posted an image of herself on Instagram. The caption accompanying the photo originally read, ‘On my way to a Disney meeting’. But as you can see, that has since been changed to ‘I look a way’. Most are speculating that the indie director let the big news slip too soon. But when it comes to social media, it’s always too late to retrace any steps accidently made. Now it looks like the cat may be out of the bag.

Some believe that Emily Carmichael is an odd choice for Captain Marvel, as she has never directed a feature film before. Only a handful of independently produced shorts. Yet, it sounds exactly like the type of move Marvel might make. And we have to remember that VFX genius Tim Miller had never directed a movie before Deadpool, and that has gone onto become one of the biggest blockbuster hits of the year.

Emily Carmichael’s shorts are said to fit within the Marvel mold, and they hold the same tone. She has shown off her films at Sundance, Tribeca SXSW, 25 New Faces of Independent Film and more. At this time, it should be noted that Jurassic World and Star Wars: Episode IX director Colin Trevorrow and his screenwriting partner Derek Connolly also follow the woman. It isn’t known how soon, or by what venue Kevin Feige and his team at Disney will announce Captain Marvel. But it sounds like she is definitely doing something with the studio. We’ll keep you posted as more news breaks.
